GLY411: Applied Geochemistry | 4 credits (30-10-0) |
Objectives
The course examines the fundamental principles of geochemistry that include: the distribution and association of elements in the Earth and Solar system as well as methods of geochemical surveys in minerals exploration.
Contents
Cosmochemistry and element abundance in stars, in the solar system, and on Earth. Global budgets of oceans and the atmosphere, and their evolution through geologic time. Geochemistry of the surface environment and the mobility and associations of elements. Primary and secondary dispersion patterns and uses. Isotope geology and applications. Igneous geochemistry and thermodynamics of metamorphic geochemistry. Principles of trace element analysis, procedures, field operations, applications, and data interpretation. Geochemical methods in mineral prospecting, survey procedures and interpretation of data.
