GLY403: Hydrogeology and Water Resources Management | 6 credits (10-30-12) |
Objectives
To study the hydrologic cycle, the origin, properties, and aquifers of groundwater. It also aims at studying the physical and chemical processes that operate in the groundwater zone, methods of exploration, assessment, exploitation, and management of groundwater.
Contents
The origin of groundwater. The hydrologic cycle. Hydrometeorology, rainfall, run off, evapotranspiration, and infiltration capacity. Aquifers, artesian systems and springs. The groundwater cycle and mapping. Geological factors which influence the recharge of aquifers. Well hydraulics. Pumping tests. Leakages from aquifers. Techniques of exploring, assessing, and exploiting groundwater. Surface and groundwater pollution and treatment. Water analysis and influence of water chemistry on use. Groundwater in sedimentary, volcanics, and crystalline rocks with emphasis on Cameroon. Reassessment of a water scheme and its management.
