GLY318: Field Geology 2 2 credits (0-0-20)

Objectives

The course introduces students to the use of geological field equipments (hand lenses, compass clinometers, Global Positioning System-GPS; etc) as well as field mapping techniques.

Contents

Use of a base-maps for locating outcrops and recording structural data. Rock descriptions and manner of sample collection and labeling. Use of GPS to get Latitudinal and Longitudinal location, as well as elevation above sea level. Entering dip and strike values as well as plunge and pitch on maps. Production and interpretation of geological Maps. Groups of students will be taken for at least five days to different locations with two or more rock types around the country for the exercise.
