CHM691: Research Methodology and Scientific Writing in Chemistry 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To equip the student with in-depth knowledge of the scientific literature and skills for mining the scientific literature; to introduce the student to scientific writing; and research methodology.

Contents

Module 1: Research Basics

Definitions and basic concepts [research; scientific method; data gathering; record keeping;

Dissemination of research results (how scientists communicate – research papers/communications; review articles; primary and secondary sources; conferences; seminars);

Writing a research paper (structure, audience, language, style, etc); Authorship/co-authorship; acknowledgements.

Module II: Research Projects - The design process; Research funding (sources, guidelines, collaborations); The execution phase; Evaluation; Reporting

Module III: Ethical Issues – Plagiarism; Manipulation/Integrity of research data; Conflict of interest.

Module IV: Intellectual Property - Definition of basic concepts (IP, patents, copyrights, etc); Ownership of research results and notebooks.
